During his reign, from 2697 B.C. the Yellow Emperor once ascended to Mount Kong Tong 崆峒山 to pay a visit to the venerated Taoist master Guang Chengzi 廣成子to seek advice on how to more effectively rule the empire, The latter replied that he was not yet prepared and hence unworthy to receive his message. Hence the Emperor retired to a nearby simple thatched hut and in solitude, fast there several weeks to clear his mind of all preconceived notions. Then he approached the celestial master again and humbly knelt before him. The celestial master then expounded to him the secrets of the workings of Nature and its vital links with all things on earth. The Yellow Emperor then recorded all his message in the Yin Fu Jing.
Though there exist several versions of the canon ranging from 300 to 400 characters, the essential contents remain unchanged. The whole canon is split into three chapters: the upper, middle and lower with their titles:
