Laozi ~ 老子

According to Taoist scriptures, Laozi was born during the Yin Shang dynasty 1766-1123 B.C. Tradition had it that when his mother was shocked by a large falling comet and conceived thereafter. It took 72 years in her womb that Laozi was born. At the moment of birth, his mother had to cut the left axillary. After birth, Laozi hair was white and hence known as Laozi meaning the old one. It was also said that when his mother passed by a plum tree, he pointed it to his mother saying this should be his surname (plum in Chinese is also a large family name). He had been the official in charge of the Imperial library for 80 years. He was hailed as hermit and had one time given advice to Confucius. Later, with the decline of the Chou dynasty, he rode on a green buffalo westward and upon the earnest request of Guan Yin zi he wrote the greatest Taoist canon containing 5 000 characters known as Tao Te Ching.

Canon of Tao Te Ching ~ 道德真經

Tao Te Ching includes all the tenets and ideas of Taoism. Thereafter he continued westward and was never known again.
“Holding until it fills, is not as good as stopping; Grinding till it is sharp cannot last long; with gold and jade fill a room can hardly be preserved; wealthy and powerful but arrogant only incur misfortune; Having achievements and fame and retire: such is the Way of Heaven.”
"持而盈之,不如其已;揣而銳之,不可長保。金玉滿堂,莫之能守;富貴而驕,自遺其咎。功遂身退天之道。"
